Setting up your First Tank

Regular Maintenance

To keep your fish and plants healthy you will have to perform some regular maintenance work at regular intervals. This should include partial water changes where you can use your siphon to suck up any dirt and uneaten food.

Test your water at regular intervals. Once nitrate goes above 25mg/l it is time for a partial water change. Check your water temperature and filter outflow daily. Your filter also needs to be cleaned at regular intervals. Never wash filter sponges in tapwater but just squeeze it out in a bucket full of water from your tank. The frequency of filter maintenance is dependant on which type of filter you are using and your stocking density. Check your water on a weekly bases for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate until you get a feeling how long it takes before your tanks water quality deteriorates.
